How to Select Plating for Power Connectors Based on Application

When choosing electroplating for power connectors, the primary consideration is the operating environment. Power connectors are primarily categorized into the following three scenarios:

1. In general applications, tin plating is the most common choice. This is because tin is relatively inexpensive, but due to its softness, a high contact force (at least 100 grams) is required to ensure good contact. The mating cycle is generally low, providing only a simple protective corrosion protection effect. Operating temperatures are relatively low. Is this true? Tin plating on bronze can reach an operating temperature of 110°C, while tin plating on steel can reach 190°C. For applications with high mating cycles, gold plating is recommended. To increase the operating temperature, nickel plating on copper can reach 340°C, while nickel plating on brass or bronze can reach 250°C.

2. For small signal applications requiring high reliability and low contact force, gold plating is generally used. Gold also offers excellent corrosion resistance. Nickel is generally used as the base for gold plating, and most steel contacts are nickel-plated (requires copper plating). Palladium has lower electrical conductivity than gold and is primarily used for gold plating, but only in limited applications. With the continued rise in gold prices, the number of products plated with palladium-nickel alloys is also increasing. Silver-plated contacts offer excellent conductivity, but silver oxidizes easily, so they should only be used in special circumstances.

Third, for corrosion protection, improving connection electrical performance, and reducing temperature rise, current electronic connectors generally require electroplating. Occasionally, in special high-current applications, electroplating is omitted, but this is now very rare.
