The Difference Between Lithium-ion and Lead-Acid Batteries for Electric Forklifts: Which Is Better?

As my country's forklift industry continues to experience exceptional growth, all product categories and domestic and international markets have achieved strong performance. Among them, the share of electric forklifts has steadily increased. At the same time, facing increasingly severe energy and environmental pressures, as well as opportunities presented by the development of new energy vehicles and the maturing of lithium battery technology, lithium-ion forklifts are experiencing a lucrative market opportunity. So, what is the difference between lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries for electric forklifts? Which is better? The key features are as follows:

1. Compared to large batteries like lead-acid and nickel-cadmium, lithium-ion batteries contain no environmentally harmful elements such as cadmium, lead, and mercury, making them pollution-free. During charging, they also avoid the "hydrogen evolution" phenomenon seen in lead-acid batteries, and they do not corrode wire terminals or the battery case, making them environmentally friendly and reliable. Lithium iron phosphate batteries have a lifespan of 5-10 years and no memory effect, eliminating the need for frequent replacement.

2. The same charging and discharging port, using the same ANE plug, eliminates the significant safety issue of forklifts operating while charging, often caused by different charging ports.

3. The lithium-ion battery pack features an intelligent battery management and protection circuit (BMS), which automatically disconnects the main circuit in the event of low battery, short circuit, overcharge, or high temperature, and provides audible (buzzer) and visual (display) alarms. Traditional lead-acid batteries lack these features.

4. Triple safety protection. Intelligent monitoring and protection devices are installed between batteries, at the battery's internal main output, and on the main busbar output, providing real-time monitoring and disconnection protection in the event of critical battery conditions.

5. Lithium-ion batteries can be integrated into the broader IoT system, serving as one of many materials and equipment. This system promptly notifies users when batteries need maintenance or replacement, and automatically aggregates information such as the time they arrived at the factory and the number of charge and discharge cycles.

6. For specialized industries, such as airports and large-scale warehouses and logistics centers, lithium-ion batteries can be charged in "fast charging mode," allowing them to fully charge the battery within a one- to two-hour lunch break, keeping Yufeng forklifts operating at full capacity and uninterrupted.

7. Maintenance-free and automatically rechargeable. Once packaged, lithium-ion batteries eliminate the need for specialized water filling or periodic discharge. Their unique constant-time active balancing technology significantly reduces on-site personnel workload and saves significant labor costs.

8. Lithium-ion batteries weigh only one-quarter and are one-third the volume of lead-acid batteries of the same capacity. This increases the vehicle's mileage by over 20% on the same battery charge.

9. Lithium-ion batteries boast a charging efficiency of over 97% (compared to 80% for lead-acid batteries) and are memory-free. Taking a 500AH battery pack as an example, this can save over 1,000 yuan in annual charging costs compared to lead-acid batteries.

Until now, lead-acid batteries have remained the preferred choice for the intralogistics industry due to their lower procurement costs. However, the continuous improvements in lithium-ion batteries and the associated reductions in production costs are causing industry professionals to reconsider. More and more customers are relying on forklifts equipped with this advanced technology to handle their intralogistics tasks.
